Client Context & Vision: There are times in life when you look around and realize—it’s time for a new chapter.
Our clients, a vibrant family with young children, had lived in their home for eight years and slowly outgrown it. They were ready to leave behind the dark, builder-grade finishes of the original design and step into something that felt wholly, unmistakably them. The new design needed to support the full, beautiful complexity of their bustling household—including thoughtful accessibility considerations for the husband, a wounded warrior veteran who uses a wheelchair, and intentional design decisions that would nurture a child with a developmental disadvantage and significant visual impairments.
This wasn’t simply a renovation. It was the creation of a home that works for every member of the family—elegantly, quietly, and without compromise.
Notable Inspiration: A single piece of art set the tone for this earthy, nature-inspired design. A large, abstract watercolor painting of a horse became the compass for the entire home’s palette and design direction. From its colors to its emotional resonance, this painting was the wellspring for the entire concept.
What Made the Finished Design Unique: We began by creating a neutral, soothing canvas: a full-home color drench, applied seamlessly across walls, trim, doors, crown mouldings, and ceilings. The effect is immediate and intentional—the eye moves calmly and continuously through each space, uninterrupted. It is the foundation upon which everything else is built.
From there, each room was given its own distinct pattern language—unique in character, yet perfectly harmonious with the rooms around it. The result is a layered, but cohesive flow that rewards the closer look: wallcoverings, tile, and decorative finishes adding texture, depth, and subtle personality at every turn.
The custom details are where the design truly sings. The living room built-in was scaled to the home’s 18-foot ceilings, its interior lined with textured wallpaper that adds visual depth and a sense of intention. The hand-finished limewash fireplace surround and chimney rise as an artisanal focal point—tactile, warm, and rich with character. And presiding over the kitchen, a one-of-a-kind custom copper range hood—finished by a local artisan using specialized mineral and metal techniques—that radiates warmth and adds dimension. Each of these elements could hold its own as a statement piece. Together, they compose a symphony.
Design Challenges & Constraints: TWe are often the most proud of what you can’t see—the relationships we build, the full sensory experiences we craft, our excitement at figuring out the perfect design solution for each situation and space. This is where the magic lives.
During installation, the custom copper range hood’s finish was unintentionally altered. Handling marks on the living copper surface created an uneven patina—a beautiful material made imperfect at the worst possible moment. For months, we pursued every traditional path toward resolution. Then we discovered a local artisan specializing in mineral plaster and metal finishes, brought them in, and watched as the hood was completely, masterfully refinished. The result is a feature that will only grow more beautiful with time—more storied, more alive.
We Bet You’d Never Guess: Every single room in this home features wallpaper—except the kitchen where a zellige tile backsplash adds organic texture and that sought-after perfectly imperfect charm.
Our Favorite Part: The custom living room built-in, lined with a textural wallpaper, paired with the layered wallpapers throughout the home. The way these elements speak to each other—quietly, confidently—captures everything we love about this project.
Our Client’s Reaction: At the initial reveal, our clients were speechless. Months later, a text arrived. Our client was sitting on her new sofa with a glass of wine in hand, children elsewhere, reading a book—when she paused, looked up, took it all in, and said to herself: “Ahhh, namaste.” That is the feeling we design toward. Every time.
